Or does she? That seems to be the sentiment floating around the Internet, but it apparently originates from people who lack a sense of humor for the most part. Fey has proven herself to be many things, but dismissive of other comedians is not one of them.
The uproar comes for a Reader’s Digest interview in which Fey is asked, “What pleases you more, applause or laughter?” She responds (more…)
Someday, comedy and satire classes should be taught using Tina Fey’s infamous “Bitch is the new black” monologue, and contrasting it with Tracy Morgan’s “Black is the new president, bitch.” Morgan stumbles his way through the jokes, and the punchline is the one part delivered with any confidence. The problem is that it really isn’t all that funny in lieu of Fey’s. Fey was being irreverent a social commentator. Morgan, in comparison, feels like the little kid on the playground shouting back, “Nuh uh, my dad can beat up your day!” Morgan can be very funny in the right circumstances, such as Fey’s 30 Rock. But here, he just mostly feels stale.
Yes, to be fair, Saturday Night Live manages to mock both Hillary Clinton as well as Barack Obama in this newest skit. Still, at a time when almost no one in the media was taking the obvious potshots at Obama, SNL has really shook things up. For the past three weeks, starting with Tina Fey’s now infamous “Bitch is the new black!” skit, SNL has taken on the darling of the media. Some credit SNL’s lampooning for Clinton’s wins in Texas and Ohio. Regardless, SNL has found its political voice again. Long before The Daily Show and The Colbert Report it was the the political humor barometer of this country. It is good to see it reclaim its position.
Tina Fey returned to her old stomping grounds of Saturday Night Live this past weekend. Part of that show included Fey also returning to her Weekend Update set to give an update on women in the news. She finished that piece with a call to arms for women to support Hillary Clinton in the presidential primaries. While Fey’s wit is undeniable, it is likely her rallying cry “Bitch is the new black” that will be remembered for some time. Perhaps Clinton should look into making some bumper stickers?
