For fans of The Omen series (and really, who isn’t?) there’s good news. Fox has announced plans to release the original film plus a box set on Blu-ray this September. The other day there was a very weird press release for the Blu-ray release of Batman: The Movie. Weird, because who was really clamoring for Batman: The Movie on Blu-ray? Not only that, but it featured a truckload of extras. Now comes this first look at the cover art for the disc. It looks, well, a little serious. Perhaps they are hoping to trick some fans of this summer’s The Dark Knight into buying this based on the cover alone? They’ll be sorely disappointed.

There are some news stories that simply catch you out of left field, and knock you for a loop. The announcement of Batman: The Movie coming to Blu-ray this year is one of those. Just for those who are confused, this is the film version of the classic, campy 1960s television series starring Adam West.

When it was originally announced that Short Circuit was coming to Blu-ray, the world let out a collective sigh of relief. Finally, people could see Steven Guttenberg in all his 1080p glory. Now comes this artwork for the case and, well, it only confirms that the studio itself doesn’t really care to much about this release. Really, is Johhny Five standing on Mars? No one is asking for high art, but this just screams cheap Photoshop job. There’s got to be better artwork out there for a potential cover. If you have any, send along to the site.

Warner Brothers has announced that starting with the March 25 release of Boonie and Clyde, some Blu-ray disc releases will get the book special edition treatment. Wait, a book? That’s right, Warner will be releasing special editions enclosed inside of books. The books themselves will contain production art, photographs and more. Other titles announced in this new series include Dirty Harry, Woodstock, Gone with the Wind and North by Northwest.
It’s great to see Warner trying something new with DVD packaging that actually adds some value to the film experience. Compare this with collectible tins, which usually only end up getting in the way, and you have what may be the start of a nice new trend. Still, there’s a big question mark over these releases and whether the included content will be worth the extra cash they are sure to cost.

File it under the category of just plain weird, but while much bigger names continue to sit out the high-definition craze movie fans will get a new Blu-Ray version of Short Circuit. Yes, that classic 80s comedy starring Steve Guttenberg, Ally Sheedy and Johnnie Five himself. Even more bizarre is that the disc will feature some nice specs and features. It will receive a 1080p transfer along with DTS-HD 5.1 sound. That’s probably more than any fan should hope for, but they’ll also get two commentary tracks to go with the film. One will feature director John Badham and screenwriters S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock. The other is apparently a music and effects track. Make of that what you will. Release date is May 20, which gives it a full month to help build buzz for Pixar’s Wall-e.
