DreamWorks continues its heated battle with Disney for king of animated studios with the announcement of Monsters vs. Aliens in Ultimate 3D. What exactly is Ultimate 3D? Well, first of all, it’s a marketing term. More technically, Monsters vs. Aliens will supposedly mark the first animated film completed entirely in 3D. Instead of Disney’s Pixar films which are first finished in 2D and then transitioned to 3D. Will it make a huge difference? Who can say? There’s been quite a bit of buzz around the new Speed Racer film, from the brothers who brought you The Matrix trilogy. The newest nugget to whet the appetite of fans? The film will debut on Imax screens alongside the theatrical release. This is becoming more and more common for bgi special effects films. It seems the day is coming soon when all major releases will make it to Imax screens. Of course, the next step after that is Imax3D. Speed Racer drives into theaters May 9. No, this title is not simply a play on words to point out the flat plot and acting in the Step Up series of films. Instead, it is a sly way of announcing that the Step Up series is about to go where Jaws and Jason Voorhees have before it, into 3D. Step Up 3-D will apparently be the next installment in the dance series, and yes, the 3D really means the film will be shot and presented in 3D. No word yet on an IMAX version.
