Rickrolling, the act of misdirecting someone to a video of Rick Astley singing his 80s pop hit Never Gonna Give You Up, is one of those goofy things that only becomes popular via the Internet. Without the Net, would anyone even be talking about Astley now or could his music really see a resurgance in popularity? Doubtful. Still, the British popster seems to take his revived fame in stride.
Astley was mostly giggles about the trend. He was asked if he’d consider doing a remix of the song, or perhaps a new video, but declined saying he thought it was something for young people. One of the more interesting bits is that he questions why it wasn’t a song with more of a message, which of course is mostly the reason it was chosen. It’s really cotton candy pop, as it almost disolves the moment it enters your brain.
Of course, that’s not really a dig against Astley. Lots of pop fits that definition. It’s fun and light and does exactly what it means to and nothing more. Still, he does have a point that such fads get old quick simply because they have little point to them. Yes, it’s funny the first four times, but beyond that it gets a little tired.
