Friday Night Lights gets third season on DirecTV, NBC

Friday Night Lights

Friday Night Lights is heralded by many as the best show you’re not watching.  In which case, it joins The Wire, Battlestar Galactica and 30 Rock as other best shows you’re not watching.  Whatever the case, many fans were upset that the low rated drama seemed on its way out, but a deal struck between NBC and DirecTV seems to have saved it.  Under the deal, episodes will apparently premiere first on DirecTV exclusively, before later airing on NBC.

It appears to be similar to the deal NBC struck with USA (both part of NBC Universal) to have Law & Order: Criminal Intent premiere on USA before moving to NBC.  It’s an encouraging trend for the networks who can no longer afford some programming outright, and for fans who wish to see their favorite series saved.  Rumors persist that the Sci-Fi Channel might be interested in a similar deal for CBS series Jericho.  However, those are just rumors.
