ESPN to create films for theatres and TV

Files under Film, TV | Posted by Justin |

ESPNESPN, who just about holds a monopoly on sports these days, has just announced a plan with parent company Walt Disney Studios to form a unit to create sports themed movies and documentaries.  While this may not sound too radically different from what ESPN currently does, this will apparently signify a shift into more productivity.  The first anthology mini-series will celebrate the network’s 30th anniversary by having thirty different filmmakers produced thirty different one-hour stories for broadcast on ESPN in 2009 through 2010.

The impetus for this idea seems to be Disney’s crazy success over the past ten years or so with sports themed films.  Everything from Remember the Titans to The Rookie have spelled box-office gold for the house the mouse built.  What would be interesting is to see some new Disney themed cartoon movies on the ESPN network.  Mickey, Donald and the gang don’t seem all that bust otherwise, and it could really open up the network to a younger audience.
