Highlander is the little franchise that could. Somehow it has survived over the years through five films and two television series. That’s a lot better than many fan favorites. While the two series were generally fairly entertaining, the film series has only really seen one good entry and that was the original. The new fifth film, Highlander: The Source, returns series star Adrian Paul as Duncan MacLeod and was released yesterday direct to DVD. While the lack of a theatrical release never bodes well for a film, this is a new age. Going straight to video doesn’t have quite the negative attachment that it once did, especially with genre films. Producers are discovering there’s a loyal audience craving anything new from a variety of franchises, an they don’t necessarily require a $50 million budget. So, go buy the new Highlander DVD or at least rent it. You might be surprised. Though, seriously, don’t hold your breath.
Garfield the cat is many things, but few would label him as crazy. His owner, Jon Arbuckle, on the other hand just might be. Have you ever considered that Garfield might simply be part of Jon’s imagination, and not actually exist at all? One individual has taken upon themselves to propose just this question by editing Garfield out of the daily comic strip. What fans are left with instead is a strip that remarkably holds up, only as a a portrait of someone delusional, instead. It’s slightly surreal, but also incredibly funny.
Seriously, was anyone questioning the sexuality of the dad from Full House? Really? Sure, there are those hipster dorks who find it clever to question the sexuality of every character in pop culture, or proclaim that Star Wars in a Communist manifesto, but were there really rumblings outside of those people? Bob Saget was a bit of a blue comic before he ever became famous, but since Full House he seems to have embraced his blueness like a Smurf. While there’s nothing particularly wrong with a comic playing blue, Saget has become sort of a sad joke. He has the image of Mr. Rogers and the mouth of Richard Pryor. That could make for a very funny combination if his jokes were more clever, but this video shows it’s just really more uncomfortable than anything.
Here’s a surreal bit to see. Jonathan Coulton is the very talented music god to geeks. His fame has exploded as of late due to the song Still Alive featured in the closing credits of the game Portal. While Coulton doesn’t actually sing the song in the game, here he is with other preforming the song live on stage. So what’s the weird part? He sings it while playing the game Rock Band, and actually receives a score for his performance from the game. First, it is slightly odd that game music is now being sold to consumers by other games. Second, how bizarre is it to see Coulton pretend rock through a video game to his own song? It isn’t technically ironic, but it’s certainly bizarre.
Tina Fey returned to her old stomping grounds of Saturday Night Live this past weekend. Part of that show included Fey also returning to her Weekend Update set to give an update on women in the news. She finished that piece with a call to arms for women to support Hillary Clinton in the presidential primaries. While Fey’s wit is undeniable, it is likely her rallying cry “Bitch is the new black” that will be remembered for some time. Perhaps Clinton should look into making some bumper stickers?
